I did a bit of sunbaking today. Proper sunbaking. Occasionally Ark would run over my page as I wrote.
He has this thing about the pegs on the clothes line. He whines and barks at the pegs as though they are out to get him.
At the risk of sounding vain, my goals over the next few weeks are to tone my muscles and have darker skin. The truth is that I want to “glow” at my engagement party (like an engaged girl in celebrate mode should), and I don’t think it’s too much to ask for. I am lucky that my skin doesn’t burn easily; it has never peeled or been sore from sunburn. But I want to be bronze-ish like the time I was in Melbourne celebrating my 21st birthday. I had danced my heart out in a matted silver dress and a glowing tan.
As I look around me, hundreds of fallen rose petals are scattered on the ground. I notice the large pot of bougainvillea, neglected by me, its leaves starting to shrivel due to not enough water. It came with the home, the previous owner asked if she could leave it behind as she didn’t want to move the pot in case it crumbled. So I will water him tonight. Yes, it looks like a male plant.
I do have a fantastic display of roses here. I don’t talk about them much because I didn’t plant them, they’re not my work.
The heat was so intense at times that I had this morning’s headlines pressed onto my body. Let me explain. I was lying down on top of The Advertiser and eventually the paper began to stick to my skin due to the heat. It was amusing seeing the large dark print on my stomach and on my cheek.
Arky stayed in the shade for most of my sunbaking experience. I’d left the laundry door open for him so he could lie down on the refreshingly cool tiles. For some reason, he’d only go in there when I wasn’t looking.
I’m also really enjoying having privacy in my yard. I haven’t had this in any of the former places I’ve lived in. I worship our high fences. Up until now I couldn’t feel relaxed about sunbaking in case a neighbour decided to stick their head over the fence to initiate some satisfying small-talk:
“Sunbaking eh?”
“Uh, yes I am”.
“Pretty hot today eh?”
“Yes, it is”.
I really wish Ark would go easy on my garden. The poor back yard has been pulled at, eaten, wee’d upon, licked and… sat on. My front garden has it easy though, and has been free of such torture.
Sunbaking makes me sleepy.
