2003 Birthday Weekend

February 24, 2003

It was spread out over the weekend because I happened to have a little something planned each day. Companions over for frankfurts and way too much sugary stuff (as it turned out) on the friday, dinner with my boy on the Saturday and afternoon tea with the family on Sunday. So I’m mentioning the little things that made it all bigger than the average weekend. I found that I could divide the moments into three sections.

Something new:
I tried java green tea for the first time. During the first sip, I thought I was tasting one of the run-of-the-mill green teas. After swallowing, it left a rather tangy taste in my mouth. And it came on so unexpectedly. I highly recommend this tea.

I touched a plant with the furriest leaves ever imaginable at my grandmother’s house and decided to take home a sample for my garden. I’ll let you know when it flourishes.

There are also two chillies growing in my garden. At last.

I finally watched the film, ‘Amelie’ with my boyfriend, and we both really enjoyed it. My dog was intrigued by the continuing sound effects.

Something old:
I rediscovered avocado dip. I seem to only treat myself to it on special occasions. I guess i’ll leave it this way.

I’ve decided to give up coffee on my birthday. Again.

My uncle fixed a leaking tap in my backyard. The water runs through my garden a lot better now.

I bid farewell to a work colleague as he makes the move to the state that was previously a home to me.

Something Jen:
I first smelt the scent of ‘oceanus’ a couple of years ago and couldn’t decide whether it was fresh enough for me. My cousin gave me some soaps of said scent as part of a birthday present. I stored them in my bedroom. The scent now lingers throughout the whole house. And I have decided that it does smell fresh and good.

At the birthday gathering I had on the friday night, I talked about floristry and how it would be nice to get into such a trade.

On Sunday morning, one of the lilies – from the birthday bouquet that my boyfriend’s parents had given me – had opened up. It was big and yellow and beautiful. I held it to my nose, smelling it. The morning wore on, and soon after I had the feeling that I had something on my nose. I looked in the mirror and saw that my nose was covered in light brownish stains. I was horrified. I thought my dog was at fault. Then I remembered the warning I had received about pollen stains. It wasn’t easy to wash off the stain either.
